612 622Coastside Jewish Community has always been known for its welcoming attitude to everyone. Our WSP activities have been particularly significant.

For example, CJC’s Welcoming Synagogue Project (WSP) sponsored a resource table at the Pride Celebration in San Mateo’s Central Park on June 14, 2014.

The WSP committee felt that CJC should have a strong presence at this event because we are a community that is actively engaged in creating a safe, inclusive environment for individuals and families who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex (LGBTQQI). As a group, we know that each of us as well as our overall congregation benefits from embracing our diversity. We each have personal stories either about our own coming out or about being there for family and friends who have been shunned for coming out.

As we mark the 45th anniversary of Stonewall, we still contend with discrimination. Living in the “enlightened” Bay Area does not mean for a second that there are not young people and old who are marginalized or struggling to support someone who is. For these reasons, WSP team members Sarah Burge and Lissen Lev Chaya volunteered their time to show up strong for CJC.

The CJC WSP also met for its quarterly gathering on July 23rd in the beautiful redwoods of Huddart Park. This meeting was focused on enjoying our community connections. We also conducted a Torah study in nature centered on exploring re-interpretations of Breshit and the human creation story from a non-gendered perspective. Our next meeting will be in mid-Fall. Contact Sarah Burdge for more information about joining the group.
