Important Message regarding Jhos and Julie
from your CJC Board of Directors

Dear Chevra,

As promised, the Board is letting you know that we have just received the final word from Julie and Jhos that they have accepted the position at Chochmat HaLev in Berkeley.  We are happy for them, as they can now continue their spiritual leadership closer to their home. They have expressed their love and caring for our community, and a commitment to fully serving as our clergy through mid-November. You’ll be hearing from them directly in a letter to the members next week.

We know their departure presents challenges, and deeply affects us all.  This also opens up many wonderful  opportunities. We believe that CJC is on a transformational course of positive growth and change.  We are also in a strong position, both financially and spiritually.  Many of you have let us know you’re energized to sustain this sacred and holy community with ideas, volunteering, planning, and, of course, showing up to the many wonderful and nurturing ways we gather together, whether for prayer, meals, learning, fun, or support.  Our community has always been, and will continue to be, about the relationships we build and the connections we make.

In addition to High Holy Days, Julie and Jhos will be with us for Shabbat services in Half Moon Bay at Holy Family Church, as well as home-based Shabbatot in Pacifica, Peninsula and East Bay.  Jhos will be with us for Sukkot in October. Also, we will have a Community Learning Day interfaith Sunday service at HFC in November. Additionally, please save Saturday, November 15th (afternoon through sunset, on the Coast, details in future Updates) for a community send-off gathering for our long-time clergy, our much-loved Julie and Jhos.

We want to hear from you.  The Board, the Advisory Task Force for this transition, and the newly formed Interim Clergy Working Group are all working hard to create various plans to help our congregation remain a solid presence for everyone. If you are interested in joining these discussions, please contact Board President Cathy or Vice President Sara.  Notes from these committee meetings will be posted on the CJC website next week. We are also in consultation with Jewish Community leaders as well as with Jhos and Julie.  If you have questions or comments about any of these issues, or would like to help plan for the future, please feel free to contact a Board member (see phone numbers and links below).

We welcome your input. There will be two opportunities next month to talk in a group about how this affects you and to share your thoughts and feelings about our community’s future:

*    On Friday, September 12 we will meet at 6pm before 7:30 Shabbat Service in Half Moon Bay at Holy Family Church

*    On Sunday, September 14 we will meet at noon before the 2pm Board meeting in El Granada

More details on both of these meetings will appear in the next Update.

Creating Jewish Community is what brings us together at CJC, and our community shares a strong and loving bond.  We look forward to seeing you soon at Shabbat, High Holy Days, Sukkot, and other celebrations and events.

PS: If you haven’t already renewed your membership, please take a moment and do it now!
