Kirtan Shabbat

Led by JD Kleinke

Friday March 11, 6:00 pm
at the home of Sara and JD  in El Granada
Please join us for a kirtan-style Shabbat, led by JD Kleinke. This will be a traditional home-based Erev Shabbat service done in the style of Hindu kirtan – the type of call-and-response singing often associated with yoga meditation, and familiar to us at CJC. Kirtan is an easy-to-follow form of devotional singing . . . to celebrate the holiness in all, in our sacred texts, and in each other . . . designed to invoke the meditational spirit that is at the heart of all Jewish prayer. As with most Jewish prayer, it is invoked together; it is the creation of sacred community through breath, voice, and music. All are welcome – from all traditions and non-traditions – to come sing, dance, hum along, or just sit and close your eyes. Song sheets with the Hebrew words (transliterated!) will be provided.
Sara and JD have done this for years with their Portland congregation and are looking forward to sharing this with their new Coastside Community!

6:00 pm – We start with hello’s and appetizers

6:30 pm – We start the service, including the lighting of Chanukah and Shabbat candles, and healing and mourning rituals
7:30 pm – We share a vegetarian pot luck dinner

The house has a large common space and we will sit on cushions on the floor or in folding chairs – please feel free to bring along your favorite cushion or chair!  It is also acceptable to skip the service and just come for the pot luck.

Please bring along a vegetarian dish to share.  Sara and JD will provide wine and soft drinks and appetizers.

RSVP to JD for address and directions.
