Social Action

Social action is about people coming together to help improve their lives and solve the problems that are important in their communities. It can include volunteering, giving money, community action or simple acts of kindness.

The CJC Social Action Committee is guided by the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam or “to repair the world.” CJC members are concerned with a broad range of social justice issues — from homelessness to hunger, to the needs of Jews around the world. We choose and participate in projects that promote social justice through local and national activism and via members’ research, teaching and community service.

Taking part in social action is also associated with higher levels of well-being. We believe that Tikkun HaOlam

(Repair of the World) goes hand-in-hand with Tikkun HaNefesh (Repair of the Soul).

Examples of our work include raising awareness of environmental issues and climate change, writing to government officials, and helping people in need. In this time of COVID, even smiling at someone during your morning walk counts as social action as it helps to raise morale and aid in improving the mental well-being of those feeling the weight of the current circumstances.

Current Social Action Committee Priorities:

  • Fair Government and Voting Rights. We work to assure that all voices are heard and represented at all levels of our government.
  • Environmental Justice. We act both locally and nationally to find community solutions for a sustainable, healthy future planet and to hold private and public entities accountable.
  • Racial and Economic Justice. Historical, systemic injustices have produced a dearth of economic opportunity for many.  We work to right racial and economic marginalization in our community and the nation.  We proudly support Black Lives Matter.
  • Immigrant Justice. We advocate for fair and compassionate immigration policies. We accompany and advocate for people threatened by deportation. We stand up for human rights and the dignity of all people.
  • Community Action.  Our collective and individual efforts include support for public school education, food bank distribution, victims of domestic violence and those with economic hardship or homeless.
  • We stand firmly with our LGBTQ community in partnership with Coastpride.

From grassroots community advocacy, mobilizing, and organizing we listen to those who have the most pressing needs and we put into action our faith in humanity.
